Tooth-Colored Fillings

A composite filling is a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture that Dr. Keith Rudolph uses to restore decayed teeth. Composite resins, or tooth-colored fillings, provide good durability and resistance to fracture in small to mid-size fillings that need to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing. They are an excellent choice for people who prefer that their fillings look more natural.

Many people are more conscious about the way they look, therefore they don’t want silver fillings that show when they laugh or smile. It generally takes longer to place a composite filling than it does for a metal filling and that’s because composite fillings require the tooth be kept clean and dry while the cavity is being filled. Composites bond to the tooth to support the remaining tooth structure, which helps prevent breakage and insulate the tooth from excessive temperature changes. Although no filling lasts forever, maintaining a proper oral hygiene routine can help your filling live up to it’s maximum potential.

Oral Cancer and Screenings

Certain lifestyle choices can have a great impact on the health of tissues inside your mouth. Heavy alcohol use, sun exposure, HPV infection, or a personal history of oral cancer are just a few examples. At the practice of Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS, oral cancer screenings are a very important part of the dental visit for the patient. The goal of oral cancer screening is to identify mouth cancer early when there is a greater chance for a cure.

Mouth cancer is one of several types of cancer grouped in a category called head and neck cancers. Some symptoms may include: red or white patches on the inside of the mouth or lips, loose teeth, difficulty or pain when swallowing. Some screening tests are used because they have been shown to be helpful both in finding cancers early and in decreasing the chance of dying from these cancers. It is important to remember that just because Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS recommends an oral cancer screening doesn’t mean that you have cancer.

If you have further questions about oral cancer or oral cancer screenings, give us a call. Advantages of Dental Implants

If your grin is a bit toothless due to a mouth injury, tooth decay, or periodontal disease, then Dr. Keith Rudolph has a variety of solutions for you. One of these fixes includes dental implants. Dental implants are replacement tooth roots that provide a strong foundation for fixed (permanent) or removable teeth that are made to match your natural teeth.

There are many advantages of dental implants including, improved appearance, speech, comfort, self-esteem, easier eating, and improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, therefore nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, leaving more of your own teeth intact. Dental implants are a popular and effective way to replace missing teeth and are designed to blend in with your other teeth. Because dental implants look and feel like your own teeth, they become a part of you, delivering a more confident smile.

How to Brush Properly

Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop oral health problems before they develop and is much less painful, expensive, and worrisome than treating conditions that have been allowed to progress. As much as we love to see you at the dental office of Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS, we want you to keep your permanent teeth for a lifetime. You can do that by following the oral hygiene basics of brushing properly.

Proper brushing is essentially for cleaning teeth and gums effectively. Use a toothbrush with soft, nylon, round-ended bristles that will not scratch and irritate teeth and gums. The American Dental Association recommends the following technique for brushing your teeth:

  • Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against the gums.

  • Move the brush back and forth gently in short (tooth-wide) strokes.

  • Brush the outer tooth surfaces, the inner tooth surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of the teeth.

  • Use the tip of the brush to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth, using a gentle up-and-down stroke.

  • Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen your breath.

Last but not least, schedule regular dental checkups keep your mouth healthy year round. Reasons for Tooth Extractions

Although permanent teeth were meant to last a lifetime, there are a number of reasons why tooth extraction may be necessary. A very common reason involves a tooth that is too badly damaged, from trauma or decay, to be repaired. Before deciding if a tooth extraction is needed, Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS will first take an x-ray of the area to determine what kind of damage has been done. From there, he will formulate a plan to best remove the tooth.

Reasons for pulling teeth include: a crowded mouth, or infection. Sometimes dentists pull teeth to prepare the mouth for orthodontia. The goal of orthodontic appliances is to properly align the teeth, which may not be possible if your teeth are crowding your mouth.

If tooth decay or damage extends to the pulp – the center of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels – bacteria in the mouth can lead to infection. Often, this can be corrected with root canal therapy, but if the infection is so severe that antibiotics or endodontic therapy do not cure it, extraction may be necessary to prevent the spread of infection.

If you are experiencing a toothache, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. CEREC Technology for Dental Restorations

Thanks to CEREC technology, Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS can provide patients with inlays, onlays, crowns, and veneers in only one appointment. CEREC stands for Ceramic Reconstruction and is a sophisticated system of designing and making high quality, metal-free dental restorations in one patient visit. Using this system, Dr. Keith Rudolph can restore your smile without the need for laboratory assistance, impressions or temporary restorations.

By providing patients with CEREC technology, we can provide dental restorations at a lower cost to you. Usually, crowns are a multiple visit process, but with CEREC you can have a complete crown done in less than two hours. If you have a cracked tooth, old failing restorations, or otherwise large damage on your teeth, you may be a CEREC candidate. The design and manufacturing process involves optically scanning and digitizing dies created from the master impression of the prepared teeth/cores, so that the dimensions of the margins may be duplicated precisely. The scanned 3D images of the dies are then used to design the substructure, prompted by the computer software. The CEREC machine then creates a restoration according to design specifications.

If you have questions about the CEREC process, give us a call. To learn more about CEREC as well as the services provided at the practice, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS in Fairfield, CT, call 203-254-9533.

Benefits of Dentures

Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS offers a wide variety of restorative options for missing teeth, but here we are going to discuss the benefits of dentures. For people who have lost their teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay, or injury, dentures can restore their smile and help them with everyday tasks such as eating and speaking. There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS will help you choose the type of denture that’s best for you based on how many teeth are going to be replaced.

Complete (full) dentures are used if you’re missing teeth in your upper (maxillary) or lower (mandibular) jaws. Partial dentures are used on patients who only have some teeth missing on either jaw. Complete dentures replace all of the teeth, while partial dentures fill in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevent other teeth from shifting position. Your dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them, however, you will decrease your risk of periodontal disease as well as ease the stress of your jaw while wearing them.

If you have missing teeth, give us a call to discuss your treatment options. To learn more about dentures as well as the services provided at the practice, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS in Fairfield, CT, call 203-254-9533.

Why Do Root Canals Have a Bad Rep?

The term “root canal” is bound to send shivers down your spine, especially if you need one performed, but why? Preconceived notions that root canal treatment is filled with pain and discomfort are nothing more than outdated myths. In fact, root canal treatment doesn’t cause pain, it actually relieves it. This is because when Dr. Keith Rudolph performs a root canal he is saving your tooth in the process.

Root canal or endodontic treatment is necessary when the inside, or pulp of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. The pulp contains the nerves and blood vessels – essentially they keep the tooth alive. It is through the pulp that temperature and pain are perceived. The inflammation or infection can have many causes but mostly are the result of deep decay or trauma. Not only can a root canal procedure protect your mouth from further damage, but it eliminates the pain you may have been experiencing because of the infection.

If you have questions about root canal therapy as well as other dental services that Dr. Keith Rudolph provides at the office, give us a call, or visit www.drkeithrudolph.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Keith Rudolph in Fairfield, CT, call 203-254-9533.

Digital X-rays in the Dental Office

If eligible, you may receive two types of dental X-rays upon arriving for a treatment at Dr. Keith Rudolph’s practice: intraoral (the X-ray film inside the mouth) and extraoral (the X-ray film outside the mouth. A digital X-ray allows Dr. Rudolph to take an image of the tooth or teeth and put it into an imaging program. As a benefit to the patient, the digital X-ray also provides nearly 80% less radiation than a standard X-ray.

Here at the practice, Dr. Rudolph will review your history, examine your mouth and then decide whether or not you need X-rays. Dental X-rays are a useful diagnostic tool when helping Dr. Rudolph detect damage and disease not visible during a routine dental exam. How often X-rays should be taken depends on your present oral health, your age, your risk for disease, and any signs and symptoms of oral disease. For example, children may require X-rays more often than adults because their teeth and jaws are still developing and their teeth are more likely to be affected by tooth decay than those of adults.

To learn more about digital X-rays and the dental services that Dr. Keith Rudolph provides at the office, give us a call, or visit www.drkeithrudolph.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Keith Rudolph in Fairfield, CT, call 203-254-9533.

Importance of Periodontal Health

Paying attention to your dental hygiene and health – especially your gums – may pay you back with more than a gleaming, healthy smile and manageable dental bills. It may keep your heart healthy too. Dr. Keith Rudolph is here to help you maintain healthy gums with routine cleanings because healthy gums aren’t just important for your oral health, they are important to your overall health as well.

When you have healthy gums, your teeth are well supported by the tissue in your gums and your chances for long-term oral health are significantly increased. Because periodontal disease is linked to an increased susceptibility to systemic disease (bacterial pneumonia, diabetes, cardiovascular disease), it is important to prevent it as well as control it. Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly is important and helps remove the thin film of bacteria that builds up on your teeth each day and contributes to tooth decay. If you have trouble maintaining a daily oral hygiene routine, give Dr. Keith Rudolph a call today.

Veneers in Fairfield, CT

Dr. Keith Rudolph offers Veneers to help you restore your smile as well as your self-esteem. Dental veneers are a form of cosmetic dentistry in which a shell or layer of tooth-colored porcelain or composite is placed over the facial surfaces of your teeth to correct worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment or spacing, discoloration and chips or cracks.

Veneers are an excellent way to redesign and reshape your mouth. Veneers are a very thin ceramic shell that covers your existing tooth structure. Although veneers do not require any special care, they generally last between 5 and 10 years. After this time has passed, the veneers will need to be replaced. The removal of any natural tooth structure is permanent, so Dr. Keith Rudolph prefers to offer patients with the most minimally invasive options first. If your natural teeth are functional and esthetically adequate, dental veneers may not be an appropriate treatment for you.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

In spite of the dental technology that has made dentistry virtually pain-free, dental fear and anxiety still keeps millions of patients away from the dental office every year. Here at the office, Dr. Keith Rudolph wants to ensure that you are relaxed as humanly possible, which is why he offers sedation dentistry to patients who are eligible.

There are several types of sedation dentistry to treat different levels of dental anxiety, each putting you in varied states of relaxation. The levels of sedation used include:

  • Minimal sedation – where you are awake but relaxed.

  • Moderate sedation – you may slur your words when speaking and not remember much of the procedure.

  • Deep sedation – you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.

  • General anesthesia – you are completely unconscious.

Anesthesia is generally safe, but there is always a risk when being sedated. However, certain people, such as those who are obese or have obstructive sleep apnea, should talk to their doctor before having sedation. That is because they are more likely to develop complications from the anesthesia.

If you have dental phobia give us a call so we can help you relax for your next appointment. To learn more about our sedation practices at the office, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com for more information. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Keith Rudolph in Fairfield, CT, call 203-254-9533.

Straighten Your Teeth the Invisalign Way

invis.jpg

Perhaps you had braces as a child and never maintained the follow-up care, or you might just be an adult with a crooked smile who never had braces before. Whatever the case may be, there is an option to straighten your teeth invisibly. Invisalign is a revolutionary technology that promotes teeth straightening without the need for conventional metal braces and Dr. Keith Rudolph can provide you with them after a few visits to the office.

During the consultation, you and Dr. Keith Rudolph will discuss your case in detail to determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign. He will then take x-rays, pictures and impressions of your teeth, which the Invisalign lab will use to create a digital 3D image of them. From these images, Dr. Keith Rudolph will map out a precise treatment plan, including the exact movements of your teeth, and tell you the approximate length of treatment. Once you begin treatment you will begin wearing a new set of aligners, advancing you to the next stage of your treatment. For best results and a timely outcome, you should wear your comfortable, smooth, plastic aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day, throughout your entire treatment.

What to Expect After a Dental Crown is Applied

When you will be getting a dental crown placed on your tooth, it is nice to know what to expect afterwards. Dental crowns are custom created “caps” that go on a tooth to restore damage. Dr. Keith Rudolph offers dental crowns at our Fairfield, CT dental practice. As with any dental procedure, there will be a healing time where special directions should be followed.

In our dental practice, we have CEREC technology, so this means that there is no waiting for a dental crown to be created by a laboratory. A crown can be created within your appointment for immediate placement. However, for cases where temporary crowns will need to be worn before the permanent crown, one must be careful. The temporary crown is not as stable as a permanent one, so avoid hard and sticky foods. Brush and floss carefully so the crown is not dislodged or pulled up.

After the permanent crown is placed, there may be some sensitivity. When the soft tissue heals, any sensitivity or irritation will go away. A warm salt water rinse or some ibuprofen will help in the meantime.  As you adjust to your new tooth, it should start to feel like one of your normal teeth. Any problems should be reported to your dentist.

Dental crowns restore the health of a tooth and improve the look of a smile. For more instructions or information about dental crowns, contact Dr. Keith Rudolph at our Fairfield, CT dental practice. Call us at (203) 254-9533 or visit our website, www.drkeithrudolph.com.

Electric Toothbrush vs Manual Toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes and manual toothbrushes have long been debated about which is better. When choosing a new toothbrush, it is nice to know which one will get you the best cleaning. Dr. Keith Rudolph in Fairfield, CT wants his patients and all dental patients to know the difference between electric and manual toothbrushes so they can make an informed purchase.

According to recent studies, manual toothbrushes do just as good of a job brushing teeth as electric ones. The only difference is that the more expensive sonic toothbrush happened to show less cases of gingivitis. However, this could be because people who spend more on healthcare supplies often stick to their healthcare routines better.

The studies showed that the toothbrush really didn’t matter much when determining how to get a good brushing. What mattered most was the person brushing. Having the right technique is key to good oral care, no matter what type of toothbrush you choose. However, for those with trouble using their hands, like those with arthritis, an electric toothbrush may help them get a better cleaning as they do most of the work. Electric toothbrushes require less maneuvering around the mouth.

When it comes to better quality, electric toothbrushes and manual toothbrushes are on the same page for the most part. Again, it depends on the person using the toothbrush. For more tips on oral care, contact Dr. Keith Rudolph here in Fairfield, CT by calling (203) 254-9533 or by visiting our website, www.drkeithrudolph.com

Full and Partial Dentures in Fairfield, CT

When missing most or all of your teeth, you can appear older than you are. The missing teeth cause a loss in jaw and facial structure, making your facial muscles sag. Dr. Keith Rudolph is restoring smiles and confidence by offering full and partial dentures to his patients.

Dentures are a removable tooth replacement option for all of the teeth. They are replacements for top and bottom teeth that are strong, durable, and good-looking. They are made to look natural and healthy. We have available full dentures for replacement of all the teeth and also partial dentures for replacement of just some of the teeth.

Full dentures can be placed conventionally and immediately, depending on your lifestyle. Immediate dentures are great for those who do not want to spend any time without teeth; however they may have to be re-fitted in the future. When teeth are extracted for denture placement, the healing process takes some time. When the gums heal they can shrink, causing the dentures to be misplaced in the future.  Conventional dentures are placed a few months after the extractions.

Partial dentures are similar to dental bridges but they are not permanent fixtures; they are removable. They work by being attached to stable teeth adjacent to the open space.

Replacing missing teeth will restore your confidence and allow you to eat the things you’ve been missing. To find out if dentures are right for you, schedule an appointment with Dr. Keith Rudolph in our Fairfield, CT dental practice. Call us at (203) 254-9533 or visit our website, www.drkeithrudolph.com

What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?

Sensitive teeth can stop you from eating some of your favorite things. It can also make brushing your teeth uncomfortable. Stopping teeth sensitivity may be a very simple fix; however it may also be an indicator of a more serious problem. Dr. Keith Rudolph of Fairfield, CT wants his patients to be aware of what can cause teeth sensitivity and what it means for their oral health.

Teeth can become sensitive for a variety of reasons. The wear down of enamel is a big reason. Brushing with stiff bristles, brushing too hard, eating a lot of acidic foods, and letting plaque build up are common ways to wear down enamel. Grinding your teeth will also wear down enamel. Exposed tooth roots which are the result of gum disease can also be causing sensitivity.  Cracks or chips can cause sensitivity plus even more pain. They can also lead to an infection, so if your tooth is cracked, you should visit your dentist as soon as you can.

Sensitive teeth may be an indicator that you are eating too much acidic food or brushing too hard, and those are simple fixes. But it could also be an indicator that there is an infection, a fracture, or gum disease. If you are experiencing sensitive teeth, it is important to get an evaluation by your dentist to find out what is the cause.

Tooth sensitivity can be a real downer, but it does not have to last forever. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Keith Rudolph in our Fairfield, CT dental practice, call us at (203) 254-9533 or visit our website,www.drkeithrudolph.com

Why It is Important to Replace Missing Teeth

Missing a tooth not only diminishes the look of your smile, but it diminishes your oral health, too. Replacing a missing tooth is vital for the health of your jaw, your other teeth, and your gums. Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS wants our patients of the Fairfield, CT area to understand the importance of preserving the site of a missing tooth.

When a tooth falls out or is extracted, the jawbone loses bone and begins to deteriorate. With multiple missing teeth, this can change the shape of your jawbone, which in turn, chances the shape of your facial structure! Even when only a single tooth is missing, the deteriorated jawbone allows the other teeth in the area to shift towards that open space. This creates spaces within the teeth and introduces hard-to-reach areas where bacteria can collect.

A collection of bacteria is no doubt bad for the teeth and the gums. It can cause decay and disease. However, this is not the only way a missing tooth can harm the gums. For teeth that are at the last space in your mouth, often there will be a corresponding tooth on the opposite set of teeth. When one of the teeth is missing, there is nothing for the other tooth to clack up against, which can irritate and damage the gums.

Replacing a missing tooth is about more than just aesthetics. For information about the replacement options Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS offers in our Fairfield, CT dental practice, call our office at (203) 930-1214 or visit our website, www.drkeithrudolph.com.

Restoration Options in Fairfield, CT

Restoring a weak tooth will restore your smile. Not only will your smile be improved, but the tooth will be able to stay around for a lot longer. Here in our Fairfield, CT dental practice, Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS offers several options for tooth restoration to his patients in need of newly strengthened and protected teeth.

Dental bonding is completed using a composite resin to fix cracks and chips in the teeth. The resin is tooth-colored and polished to shine like the rest of your natural tooth, so it will blend right in. Dental bonding is long-lasting and is taken care of like normal teeth. With good care, dental bonding can last over ten years.

Dental crowns are like caps that go on the tooth after it has become weakened but still has the root intact. They are also made to look just like a normal tooth, so it will be an improvement in your smile. Here, Dr. Rudolph implements CEREC technology, so a crown is able to be created for you during your visit. Crowns can last between ten and fifteen years.

For teeth that have a little less damage, inlays and onlays are available. These are commonly called partial crowns, because they only cover the chewing surface of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are also able to be custom-created right here in our office during your appointment.

To learn more about your options for restoration here at our Fairfield, CT dental practice, contact Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS at (203) 930-1214 or visit our website, www.drkeithrudolph.com

How to Keep Your Teeth White and Bright

Keeping your teeth white can seem like a hassle. But when you know the right tips and tricks, it really is not difficult at all! Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS wants to share some tips for keeping teeth white for our patients at our Fairfield, CT dental practice!

The first place to start for white teeth is what causes the stains. Dark foods and drinks like blueberries, coffee, wine, and soy sauce are common stain culprits. Avoiding these foods can sometimes be difficult, especially when they are your favorite, but rinsing you mouth after consumption of them can help. Also, using a straw to drink dark liquids will often allow the liquid to completely skip the front of your teeth.

When stain-causing substances do reach your teeth, it is important to brush it away. Plaque, the sticky bacterial film, forms only hours after brushing and traps in the stains close to your enamel. Brushing three times per day will be ideal to make sure the plaque is not contributing to the staining. Do not forget to floss, as well!

For patients who would like to get a kick-start on their whitening, Dr. Rudolph offers customized tray whitening. Over a short period of time, this teeth whitening system can result in teeth four to eight shades whiter!

To learn more about keeping teeth white or to schedule a whitening consultation at our Fairfield, CT dental practice, call Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS at (203) 930-1214 or visit our website, www.drkeithrudolph.com

How to Choose the Right Toothbrush

Choosing a toothbrush seems like a simple task, but the one you choose can really play a part in your oral health. Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS of Fairfield, CT wants our patients to know the right things to look for when picking out a new toothbrush.

A toothbrush should have a small head. Some think the bigger the head, the more bristles, the better. But this is not true. A smaller head actually allows you to reach every surface in the mouth, which is important. Repeatedly skipping areas can lead to decay. In addition, a good grip is also important to be able to reach all surfaces of the mouth, especially for those with trouble using their hands.

Toothbrushes do not need to have stiff bristles to clear away plaque. Actually, soft bristles are best. Plus, soft bristles do not irritate the gums or wear down enamel. The soft bristles are key, however, do not choose a toothbrush that actually says “soft”, unless directed by your dentist. Instead, choose one that says medium.

What is probably the biggest difference between all the toothbrushes in the aisles is that some are electric and some are manual. Studies have shown that electric and manual toothbrushes do the same job cleaning; however, the user is what matters. For those with difficulty using their hands, an electric toothbrush may make it easier for a proper brushing.

A "Brush Up" on Brushing and Flossing

Routine check-ups and cleanings by your dentist are important to keep healthy teeth and gums, however good oral care should continue at home every day. Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS of Fairfield, CT wants to give his patients a “brush up” on brushing and flossing.

Brushing should be done twice a day. If three times a day is possible, that is best. Brushing should be done using a toothbrush that has a small enough head to reach all the surfaces in your mouth. Electric and manual toothbrushes generally can do the same job cleaning teeth, however for those with difficulty using their hands, electric toothbrushes may allow them to get a better cleaning, as the toothbrush does all the work. Make sure to also brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth!

Flossing should be done once a day. There is some debate on whether it should be done before brushing or after, but just getting it done is actually the most important. Take the floss and go in between all of your teeth. Scrub the floss through to the gum line, make a swooping motion at the gum line, and then scrub all the way back out. Make sure not to skip any spaces!

Routine dental hygiene is important for healthy teeth and gums. To schedule a cleaning with Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS in our Fairfield, CT location, call us at (203) 254-9533 or visit our website, www.drkeithrudolph.com.

Post-Extraction Care

Having tooth or multiple teeth extracted is an experience most people do not look forward to. However, with Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS of Fairfield, CT you can feel at ease knowing the important things to remember about post-extraction care.

After a tooth extraction, it is important to remember that bleeding should be minimized. It is recommended to relax for the rest of the day of surgery and any strenuous activity should be avoided until healing has progressed. It is also advised not to lie completely flat. Lie with your head propped up as not to increase blood flow to the head.

Make sure to take painkillers as directed by Dr. Rudolph. An icepack or warm salt water rinse may help with pain and swelling, as well. Brushing your teeth and tongue is still advised but do so carefully and avoid the extraction site as much as possible.

Soft foods such as mashed potatoes and pudding should be eaten until healing progresses. Make sure to drink plenty of water, but do not drink through a straw, as this could un-clot blood and promote more bleeding. Also refrain from smoking and other tobacco products as this could slow down healing and also can lead to infection.

For a full list of post-op and post-extraction instructions, visit our website, www.drkeithrudolph.com. To schedule an appointment, call Dr. Keith Rudolph, DDS at (203) 254-9533 or visit our website.

Whitening and Bleaching

When staining agents such as coffee, wine or acidic foods are able to penetrate the enamel of the teeth, it can be difficult to return to the original teeth shade through brushing and flossing alone. Patients in the Fairfield, CT area with brown or yellow teeth are now utilizing tooth bleaching with Dr. Keith Rudolph. His Family, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dentistry offers the most advanced tray whitening systems available to help brighten patient’s teeth quickly and effectively. Unlike over the counter whitening products that are messy and tend to slide off teeth, professional whitening provided by Dr. Rudolph whitens teeth 4-8 shades in just a couple of steps.

During the first visit, Dr. Rudolph will need to determine if the teeth are intrinsically or extrinsically stained. Extrinsic stains are on the surface, having barely penetrated the enamel. These stains are caused things like coffee, smoking and even aging, they are, however, reversible through bleaching.  On the other hand, intrinsic stains develop from the inside of the teeth and are often caused by more permanent staining agents such as antibiotics. The teeth are darkened as a result of bacteria buildup and cannot be reversed by whitening alone. Once it is determined what type of staining your teeth has, Dr. Rudolph and his staff will explain the whitening process and how it will affect your type of staining.

Patients can be fitted with custom-made mouth guards that are used during the whitening process.  Tray whitening is performed by applying a high concentration of oxidizing agent to the teeth with custom-fitted thin plastic trays for a short period of time, which produces quick results in most cases. The application trays ideally should be well-fitted to retain the bleaching gel, ensuring even and full tooth exposure to the gel. Trays will typically stay on the teeth anywhere from 45 minutes to overnight depending on your staining and sensitivity.

To learn more about custom tray whitening visit www.drkeithrudolph.com or call 203-930-1214 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Keith Rudolph at his Fairfield, CT Family, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dentistry.

Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy is a method to save a severely decayed tooth that cannot support a traditional filling. However, at Dr. Keith Rudolph’s Family, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dentistry, his experienced team offers root canal therapy using rotary endodontics, a special tool that makes the root canal process faster and more precise.

When bacteria invade the tooth, it can multiply and penetrate near the tooth’s nerves. This can cause sensitivity and pain at the tooth. This pain and discomfort is one signal that the decay is significant. After evaluating the tooth to determine if the tooth decay is significant enough, Dr. Rudolph may recommend a root canal. Root canal therapy can save an otherwise highly decayed tooth from extraction.

A root canal involves removing the infected tooth roots and nerves, cleaning the canals and filling the canals with antibacterial medications to reduce the likelihood infection will occur. After numbing the gum and tooth area, Dr. Rudolph will use a specialized tool using an electrical rotary hand piece. This hand piece benefits the patients by allowing the doctor to access the inner portion of the tooth more quickly. This reduces chair time for a patient, allowing them to return to their lives.

For more information on root canal therapy and rotary endodontics at Dr. Keith Rudolph’s Family, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dentistry, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com. You can schedule an appointment with Dr. Keith Rudolph by calling 203-930-1214.

White Composite Fillings

Everyone wants to have a nice, healthy smile. Even if you take great care of your teeth and do everything you can in order to prevent a cavity, it may occasionally develop. Dr. Keith Rudolph gives his Fairfield, CT patients the best options in dental fillings by using white composite fillings.

Dr. Rudolph and his experienced and knowledgeable staff want you to leave their office completely satisfied with your dental experience. In the past, fillings were often made of different metals including gold and silver. This type of filling is known as an amalgam filling. Although in some instances amalgam fillings may still be used, newer options exist, which look natural and improves a patient’s smile.

White composite fillings offer several advantages over other types of fillings. For instance, aesthetics are one of the major benefits of white composite fillings. Dr. Rudolph is able to blend colors together in order to match the shade of the tooth being filled and surrounding teeth. This creates a natural appearance and allows the filling to blend in, so it is not noticeable. Composite fillings also strengthen the integrity of the tooth.

With other types of fillings, it may be necessary to drill more in order to shape a space, which will securely hold the filling. Since the bonding process helps hold the filling in place, less drilling is involved. That means less time spent in the dental chair. In some instances, white composite filling can be used with other materials in order to get the best possible results.

For more information on white composite filling or other dental procedures offered by Dr. Keith Rudolph in Fairfield, CT call 203-930-1214.

Mini Dental Implants

Mini dental implants are an effective and durable alternative to traditional dental implants. While dental implants are useful for many dental problems, mini implants are used for restoring missing, broken or infected teeth in narrow areas. Dr. Keith Rudolph utilizes this alternative treatment for patients do not qualify for traditional dental implants at his practice in Fairfield, CT.

Mini implants are about half the size in diameter of a regular dental implant and are composed of titanium. Since they are so small, mini implants are great for restoring small teeth, pre-molars and frontal teeth. One of the main functions of mini implants is for patients who lack the bone to support the larger size of conventional dental implants. Mini implants are also great when it comes to installing full upper or lower dentures. A series of mini implants, between four and six, will be places along the gum line and serve as the base of the denture.

Placement of mini dental implants is not surgical like traditional implants. The devices can be inserted right through the gum into the bone. Since the procedure is non-invasive, recovery time is much less than that of traditional dental implants. Dental implants need between three and six months to graft to the jawbone while mini implants can be completed in as little as one procedure. Mini implants are directly attached to the gum line rather than the jawbone.

Thanks to their durability, small size and affordability, mini dental implants are one of the best options for securing dentures and restoring teeth. To learn more about mini implants, as well as standard dental implants, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com

Sedation Options

If you have delayed going to the dentist because of fear, you are certainly not alone. Dental anxiety — or fear of the dentist — is common among many people. The sound of the drill or the smell of latex gloves is enough to get many dental patients running for the exit door. As a result, many patients put off going to the dentist for far too long, or worse, never go to the dentist. However, with recent studies linking some dental problems to serious and even life threatening conditions, it’s imperative to see your dentist regularly. The good news is sedation dentistry offered by Dr. Keith Rudolph at his Family, Cosmetic and Reconstructive Dentistry in Fairfield, CT makes the fear of the dentist a thing of the past.

Sedation dentistry is transforming the dental industry and closing the door on the myth that going to the dentist is a stressful, pain-stricken and otherwise traumatic experience. In order for dental procedures to be conducted with the least amount of anxiety and stress to the patient, sedation dentistry places the dental patient into a relaxed state. Also referred to as relaxation dentistry, dental patients can choose from a range of sedation levels, awareness, and relaxation states, depending on their anxiety level. Minimal and moderate sedation dentistry helps the patient relax, while being awake and aware. Deep sedation, on the other hand, puts the patient on the brim of consciousness. Lastly, Dr. Rudolph’s patients can choose general sedation, in which the patient is unaware of the dental procedure and is asleep.

For patients who suffer from dental anxiety, sedation dentistry and relaxation dentistry give our patients an opportunity to improve and maintain their dental health, in addition to having minor dental procedures performed before turning into more costly major procedures. Dr. Keith Rudolph, who has advanced training in sedation dentistry, believes that going to the dentist should not be a fearful experience. He urges patients to not put off addressing a dental concern and to consider sedation dentistry.

Transform Your Smile with Veneers

Aesthetic dentistry is a specialty offered by Dr. Keith Rudolph in Fairfield, CT. It allows patients to improve the appearance of their teeth and gain more confidence through procedures such as veneers and aesthetic dentistry. Veneers are a popular way to enhance the appearance of the teeth with thin ceramic shells bonded to the teeth. They are made to fit over the teeth without being noticeable to others. Patients with discoloration or staining, misshapen, gaps or spaces, or cracked teeth often choose veneers for the benefit of an improved and stronger smile.

Getting veneers in Fairfield, CT typically requires two to three visits. It begins with preparing the tooth through contouring and shaping. This is done to make room for the veneer and allow it to fit properly. Once the tooth or teeth are ready, impression molds are made and sent to the dental lab so the veneers can be fabricated. The patient is sent home with temporary veneers which are shaped to look natural and beautiful. The veneers are made to match the same basic shape and color of the other teeth. Once they are ready, which takes about two weeks, Dr. Keith Rudolph removes the temporary veneers and bonds the permanent lab-made veneers to the teeth.

Fairfield, CT patients who have veneers placed by Dr. Rudolph say that their veneers feel just like their natural teeth. Patients can eat, brush and floss their teeth as they normally could before their veneers.  Dr. Rudolph encourages patients to contact his office to find out more about getting veneers through aesthetic dentistry.

If your teeth are cracked, misaligned, discolored, stained or broken, schedule a consultation with Dr. Keith Rudolph by calling 203-930-1214 or visit www.drkeithrudolph.com to learn more about veneers.

The Importance of Preventative Dentistry

Preventative care is a familiar topic of discussion regarding all forms of health.  The importance of preventative dental care is no different.  Dr. Keith Rudolph and his team at his Fairfield, CT Family, Cosmetic, and Reconstructive Dentistry regularly stress the importance of preventative dentistry to their patients.  They encourage everyone to learn more about the steps that you can take in early preventative dental care.

Unlike many other forms of dental care, early preventative dentistry is dependent upon the everyday actions of the patient.  Brushing, flossing and keeping the surface of your teeth clean and protected from corrosive substances like carbonated beverages and orange juice are extremely important.  When we remove substances like sugar and starch from the surface of our teeth, we can prevent cavities before they even have a chance to form.  Brushing and flossing is also essential to preventing more serious oral health conditions, including periodontal diseases.  In addition to daily oral health routines, avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption are the best ways to reduce the risk of oral cancer.  By brushing and flossing daily and keeping up with bi-annual dental checkups, Fairfield, CT patients can prevent the buildup of bacteria that has been linked with advanced gum disease and even heart problems.

Preventative dentistry also involves addressing minor dental problems before they become expensive to treat. By restoring cavities when they are small, patients can prevent tooth loss and the need for extensive dental surgery.  It is important to maintain these preventative dental care practices on a daily basis and to visit Dr. Rudolph for regular examinations.  With preventive dental care, you can ensure your smile stays beautiful and healthy.

Invisalign

Wearing metal braces is unattractive and uncomfortable. When teeth need to be straightened or repositioned, Fairfield, CT dentist Dr. Rudolph recommends Invisalign treatment as an alternative to metal brackets and wires. Invisalign is a state-of-the-art orthodontic procedure developed by Align Technology that offers teeth straightening treatments using clear, plastic mouth trays to painlessly move crooked teeth into their proper positions. Because you are able to remove your Invisalign, you have the unique ability to consistently maintain good oral hygiene while straightening your teeth. Unlike metal braces that are glued to teeth and cannot be removed until the treatment is completed, Invisalign trays can be easily removed so that teeth and gums can be thoroughly cleaned.

Invisalign also works to eliminate gaps or spaces between teeth or crowded teeth that are overlapping each other. Dr. Rudolph begins an Invisalign treatment plan by first assessing the extent of misalignment and determining whether the patient would be a good candidate for Invisalign. Using computer software to plan and develop multiple Invisalign tray aligners that initiate movement of teeth, Dr. Rudolph can show you exactly how your teeth will move until satisfactory results are accomplished. In addition, Dr. Rudolph will take a digital impression of your mouth to be sent to a laboratory where technicians will fabricate customized Invisalign trays.

Every two weeks, Dr. Rudolph gives patients a new Invisalign tray to be worn 22 hours a day. Each new tray offers different dimensions that exact precise forces on teeth to effect movement according to the plan devised by Dr. Rudolph. Fabricated from transparent, hypoallergenic, plastic compounds, Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible.  Comfortable, pleasant to wear and effective, Invisalign aligners are giving people the straight, healthy teeth they desire without suffering the discomfort and embarrassment of wearing metal bands and wires for several years.

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Oral and pharyngeal cancer (cancer of the mouth and upper throat) collectively kill nearly on person every hour, and in recent years, people without traditional risk factors associated with oral cancer have been experiencing an increase in occurrences. With only 60 percent of all those diagnosed with the cancer living longer than 5 years, everyone should be getting screened this April. At our office in Fairfield, CT, we take oral cancer seriously, and we are dedicated to keeping all of our patients safe with thorough screenings.

While everyone is at risk for oral cancer, certain factors can increase your risk of developing the disease. Lifestyle choices, such as heavy drinking or smoking, can greatly affect the health of tissues in the mouth, so those that partake in these activities. If oral abnormalities are caught early, it will not only expand your treatment options, including less invasive and less radical treatments, but it will also increase your chances of beating oral cancer.

Screening for oral cancer can be done during your routine checkup by Dr. Keith Rudolph, and this month is the perfect time to come in. This Oral Cancer Awareness month, the dentist can look for abnormal or suspicious tissue in your mouth, and if the dentist thinks it might be cancer, he will order a biopsy.

Oral cancer is a serious issue, and we are all at risk. To schedule an appointment, call 203-930-1214. For more information on the dentist or his services, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com.

Night Guards in Fairfield, CT

In Fairfield, CT, Dr. Keith Rudolph sees a number of patients who suffer from bruxism—a practice also known as teeth grinding. While this is a conscious problem for many who clench and grind their teeth throughout the day due to stress, even more people unconsciously grind their teeth at night while sleeping. Bruxism can cause damage to patients’ enamel, as well as cause jaw pain, headaches and gum irritation, making it is important to treat the condition, and night guards are usually the best way to do it.

Similar to those worn by athletes, night guards provide a barrier between the top and bottom teeth while the patient sleeps. By reducing the wear to their teeth and making it harder for them to grind, the patient’s smile will be healthier and they will feel better overall. Dr. Rudolph custom fits each night guard to make it as comfortable as possible. To do this, he takes an impression of the patient’s teeth and has the mouth guard created in the dental lab. These guards are very durable and can last up to 10 years.

Patients who frequently wake up with headaches or pain in their jaw may be grinding their teeth in their sleep, and treatment can prevent any serious wear to the enamel that can expose the dentin and make the teeth more sensitive to temperature changes and decay.

For a diagnosis of and treatment for night grinding, schedule an appointment by calling 203-930-1214. For more information about our practice and services, please visit www.drkeithrudolph.com

Benefits of Digital X-rays

Dental technology has improved greatly over the years, enhancing every step of dental care, from diagnosis to treatment. New technology has even made dental X-rays safer and more convenient, and many dentists have adopted digital radiography to view their patients’ teeth. At our practice in Fairfield, CT, we have many state-of-the-art technologies, including digital X-rays, to provide patients with the best dental care available.

Digital X-rays are taken in a similar manner to traditional X-rays that use film. However, instead of placing film in the patient’s mouth, the dentist uses a digital sensor is used. This sensor is connected to an imaging program on a computer that projects the image, which allows Dr. Keith Rudolph to view your teeth more closely and with better accuracy than traditional dental X-rays. Better images mean that there is a greater chance that the dentist will spot potential problems and be able to fix them before they become more serious or possibly more painful. In addition to better accuracy, digital radiography produces 80 percent less radiation than regular film X-rays, granting peace of mind to those who take X-rays frequently.

Whichever treatment you’re receiving at our practice, from a regular check-up to dental implants, we will strive to provide you with the best service with the most up-to-date technology.

Food and Drinks that Stain Your Teeth

If you’re determined to keep your pearly whites actually white, then you probably already brush your teeth daily and see your dentist periodically, but brushing can often times not be enough to keep your smile bright. This is because a lot of the food and drinks we consume can stain our teeth.

The staining power of food and beverages depends on two factors, and the first is the color of the food. Intensely colored foods and beverages tend to be the worst for our teeth. If you would be worried about spilling a certain food or drink on a white tablecloth, you can bet that it has the potential to stain your teeth. The color in food comes from chromogens, which are highly pigmented molecules that have the tendency to latch onto tooth enamel. The second factor that determines staining power is a food or beverage’s acidity level. Acidic food and drinks, even those that are not brightly colored, can promote stains by eroding the dental enamel, temporarily softening teeth and making it easier for chromogens to stick.

The top teeth-staining foods and beverages that you should avoid for whiter teeth are wine, tea, soda, sports drinks, berries, sauces and sweets. To minimize staining without forgoing your favorite foods and drinks, you can try using a straw, swallowing promptly and swishing your mouth with water after consumption. This minimizes the amount of time the acidic and colorful food is in contact with your teeth.

If you’re still unhappy with the color of your teeth after practicing good oral hygiene, you can also come to our practice in Fairfield, CT for teeth whitening services. Dr. Keith Rudolph offers the tray-whitening system, which can whiten your teeth up 4 to 8 shades in only a matter of days. To schedule an appointment, call 203-930-1214. For more information, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com.

Oral Cancer Screening in Fairfield, CT

In recent years, people without traditional risk factors associated with oral cancer have been experiencing an increase in occurrences, which means that absolutely everyone should be screened for abnormal mouth tissue during their regular dental visit.

Screening for oral cancer can be done during routine checkups by Dr. Keith Rudolph, who uses an ultraviolet light to spot abnormal tissue months or even years before they become identifiable by the unassisted eye. By shining a safe blue light into your mouth, he can expose suspicious tissue. If the dentist thinks it might be cancer, he will order a biopsy.

Oral cancer is a serious issue, and we are all at risk. Make sure to ask about an oral cancer screening during your next appointment. To schedule an appointment, call 203-930-1214. For more information on the dentist or his services, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com

Enamel Erosion and Fluoride

Tooth enamel is the semi-translucent, hard, outer layer of the teeth, and although it is the strongest substance in the human body, it is not impervious to everyday wear and tear or acid erosion. Tasked with protecting our teeth from the daily damage of biting and chewing, as well as from the temperature extremes of hot and cold foods, tooth enamel is important for keeping our teeth free of decay and pain. But if the enamel begins to erode, intervention is necessary for protecting your oral health.

Tooth enamel erosion can be caused by a number of factors, from drinking too many soft drinks or fruity juices to not cleaning your teeth often enough. Other contributing factors include eating lots of sour foods or candy, dry mouth, acid reflux disease, bulimia, teeth grinding, heaving drinking and even brushing teeth immediately after consuming acidic food or beverages. When the tooth enamel erodes, you may experience sensitive teeth, irregular or rough tooth edges, yellowed teeth and cupping or dents.

At our practice in Fairfield, CT, Dr. Keith Rudolph recommends fluoride treatment to strengthen teeth and prevent decay. Fluoride is a mineral found naturally in our water and many of our foods and can help remineralize tooth enamel that has eroded and protect it from acid in the future. Especially important to children between the ages of 6 and 16, fluoride treatment is a common part of dentistry. The mineral can be applied as a foam, gel or varnish and is a much stronger dose than found in toothpastes and mouthwashes.

To see if fluoride can help you, schedule an appointment with Dr. Rudolph by calling 203-930-1214. For more information, visit www.drkeithrudolph.com.

Pediatric Dentistry from Dr. Keith Rudolph

If you want your child to form lifelong habits that will help them maintain good oral health and beautiful smiles, you must begin developing good habits in their infancy. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children see a dentist by the age of 1, and it is important for their first dental experiences to be positive ones. At our office in Fairfield, CT, children can receive the care they need to ensure a lifetime of healthy teeth, healthy gums and a beautiful smile.

The first step to setting your child on the right path toward lifelong oral health is a fearless introduction to the dentist. Our dentist Dr. Keith Rudolph strives to establish a personal bond with every family and child to create a pleasant experience for all parties. You can help him provide an anxiety-free appointment to your child by only using positive language about the dentist and avoiding negative language. Phrases like “the dentist isn’t going to hurt you” or “you won’t feel pain” end up being counterproductive since it probably never occurred to the child to be scared of the dentist in the first place.

You should also establish a dental routine that will keep your child’s teeth healthy and white between dental appointments. Before your child turns two, you can clean their teeth and gums by wiping them with a clean, soft washcloth. When they are older and have grown most of their baby teeth, you can begin brushing with a toothbrush. As your child becomes used to regular brushing, you can let them do the brushing, but it is important for you to check that their teeth are getting cleaned. Supervise their brushing until they are five years old, and make sure they do not swallow their toothpaste.

Tips for a Healthier Smile

Regular exams and cleanings with Dr. Keith Rudolph are only a small part of a good oral hygiene routine. Everyday oral care habits also play a vital role in a healthy smile, and if you want to improve your oral health, here are some simple changes you can make.

1.            Brush better. Good technique and proper duration are essential for effective brushing. To maximize your brushing, hold your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle and make sweeping circular motions away from the gums. You should brush for at least two minutes or for the length of a song.

2.            Floss. Dr. Rudolph has probably already told you how important this is. This is because flossing can actually do a better job of removing harmful plaque than brushing, and it only needs to be done once a day. So why aren’t you doing it already? It’s the key to healthier teeth and fresher breath.

3.            Chew sugarless gum. Sugarless gum is a great way to keep your smile fresh after a meal. Not only will it improve your breath, but chewing gum increases saliva production to help wash away the acids released by the bacteria in plaque. If the gum has xylitol, it even helps reduce decay-causing bacteria.

4.            Replace your toothbrush. How long have you been brushing with your toothbrush? As your toothbrush ages, the bristles will fray and lose their cleaning ability. Extremely frayed bristles can even hurt your gums. Bacteria can also build up in the bristles of toothbrushes, so make sure you are replacing yours ever three to four months.

5.            Switch to tap water. Tap water is treated with fluoride, which is a safe and effective technique for lowering tooth decay across the nation. Plus, it’s basically free.

For more ways to keep your smile healthy, turn to Dr. Rudolph in Fairfield, CT. To schedule an appointment, call 203-930-1214. For more information, please visit www.drkeithrudolph.com.

Dr. Keith Rudolph and Gum Disease

While many people realize that taking care of their teeth is necessary for a good oral hygiene routine, they can often forget or neglect their gums, which are an essential part of maintaining your oral health. To stay in peak condition, your gums require periodontal cleanings and early treatment if disease does develop, and with Dr. Keith Rudolph, patients in Fairfield, CT can be sure that both their gums and teeth will be well cared for.

Since periodontal disease is responsible for 75 percent of all adult tooth loss cases in the United States, it is vital to check for and treat periodontal issues when they first arise. Periodontal disease develops due to plaque build-up. As it accumulates on teeth, bacteria is able to thrive, collecting around the tooth and attacking the soft tissue. In its early stages, this disease is called gingivitis, and it can cause swollen or tender gums that bleed after regular brushing and flossing. If left untreated, gingivitis can become periodontis, a much more severe gum infection that causes inflammation and damages the soft tissue and bone supporting the tooth. If periodontis is not treated, it can cause tooth loss and even a loss of bone mass in your jaw.

Root Canals in Fairfield, CT

If you’re still experiencing pain after a root canal, you may be wondering why. Aren’t root canals meant to take your pain away? There are many reasons why your tooth may still hurt. It is possible that the base of your tooth root (periapical) is still slightly tender or that your pain is caused by a temporary filling that is a bit too high. In these cases, taking OTC painkillers, preferably ibuprofen, may be all you need to alleviate your pain while your root canal heals.

However, if you’ve had a root canal at our practice in Fairfield, CT and are still experiencing pain that is severe or persistent, you should call our office immediately. Dr. Keith Rudolph may need to prescribe you an antibiotic to make sure the infection does not remain, or he may need to perform retreatment.

At your follow-up appointment, the dentist will want to know what type of pain you are experiencing. Is your tooth sensitive to hot and cold? Is it the tooth root that is sensitive or the gums that are over the tooth? Is it a constant ache, or does it only hurt when biting? Is there any swelling, drainage or pus? The answers to these questions will give Dr. Rudolph the information he needs to diagnose your pain.

Root canals don’t always work, and there are many reasons for this, including fractures of the root, convoluted or twisted root structures and failure to protect the root canal after the procedure. If this occurs, you may need further treatment. If the root canal was successful, it should feel normal most of the time.
